As the outdoors begin to flourish, the layers of warmth and cosiness that have cocooned us during winter can begin to feel heavy. Spring marks a season of refreshing our homes, swapping thick textiles for breezy linens, bringing in fresh flowers, and adding pops of cheerful colour.

The bedroom can be a great place to start when transforming the home for warmer seasons – unlike the rest of the home, where our design choices tend to cater to families or hosting guests, our bedrooms are beacons of individual taste, with more intimate design schemes that create space to rest and recuperate.

The team at WeThrift recently revealed the top 10 bedroom design trends we’ve all been adding to our Pinterest boards ahead of spring, to provide you with some ideas, inspiration, and motivation to get started…

Botanical Bedroom

• 100 per cent increase

‘After a cold and dark January, the first signs of spring from snowdrops to daffodils can bring us to hope that winter is finally behind us, so it’s easy to see why the botanical theme is the top of everyone’s decor inspiration right now,’ says Nick Drewe, Trends Specialist at WeThrift. ‘As part of this trend, we will see people embracing the great outdoors, by working in green and earthy tones to their furniture, walls and bedding.’

Statement Headboard

• 88 per cent increase

‘Traditional bold and statement headboards will also be taking over this spring, with a search increase of 88 per cent since December on Pinterest,’ says Nick. ‘While traditional and supersize headboards have been a thing for a while now, the style has evolved to more elaborate designs that become pieces of art in their own right and really complete a room.’

Panelling

• 86 per cent increase

‘Wood panelling became a hot trend during the lockdown, as people across the country turned to social media to learn the tricks of the trade,’ says Nick. ‘But it seems that the trend is set to continue throughout 2022, with an 86 per cent increase in searches on Pinterest since the end of last year, as we look to interior inspiration for that spring refresh.’

Blue Bedroom

• 83 per cent increase

Blue is one of the biggest colour trends this year, as a shade that promotes tranquility and restfulness. ‘Blue is set to be one of the most popular colours for bedrooms in 2022,’ says Joanna Ross, Manager of Product & Innovation at Sheridan. ‘It can have a positive effect on mood as it connects us to a blue sky or ocean found in nature, which helps us to feel relaxed.’

Upcycled Furniture

• 80 per cent increase

‘With the world more conscious than ever before about going green, eco-conscious initiatives have started popping up in our home, including everything from upcycling furniture like nightstands to being more sustainable when it comes to bedding choices,’ says Nick.

Shabby Chic

• 70 per cent increase

Shabby chic is an interesting spring trend for 2022, grounded in a renewed interest in antiques and thrifting. It is especially popular amongst the younger Gen Z who are using second hand marketplaces and apps like Narchie to decorate their homes. A shabby chic bedroom calls for vintage finds, distressed finishes, and an altogether more natural and relaxed design scheme.

Neutrals

• 64 per cent increase

Always a safe choice for a restful bedroom; neutrals have seen a 64 per cent increase in popularity on Pinterest as we head into warmer months. We love the unexpected colour palette in this bedroom – soft greys are so often paired with black metals or silvery metallics, but this neutral scheme uses softer pale woods instead.

Zen Bedroom

• 58 per cent increase

‘The key with this theme is to keep the clutter at bay so that your space feels peaceful. It’s therefore worth investing in some storage containers or a storage bed frame that will help you keep everything out of sight,’ says Nick. ‘To create a room that feels peaceful and tranquil, try some more neutral shades with pops of colour here and there that will give it a bit of character.’

Accent Walls

• 53 per cent increase

Accent walls can be one of the simplest ways to transform a bedroom, with a myriad of options from paint and wallpaper to tiles or panelling. In a bedroom, use an accent wall to highlight your most interesting architectural details, such as a window with a great view, or to create a zoning effect, perhaps to define a little reading nook.

Black and White Bedroom

• 47 per cent increase

A monochromatic colour palette is a very safe choice if you’re unsure about using colour in the bedroom. This striking bedroom design by Rockett St George inverts the traditional black-on-white design scheme, and instead uses dramatic black wall panelling to let the white furniture and accessories stand out.
