What Pet-Friendly Cleaning Products Should I Use?

April showers bring May flowers…but they also bring shedding hair, muddy paws and unpleasant odours from your furry friends as we all start to enjoy the warmer weather. From their food dishes to sleeping areas, the pet life can get a little messy at times, but clean-up shouldn’t get in the way of daily snuggles. So, what’s the secret to managing all those pet messes efficiently and effectively? It’s all about choosing the right products for your home, pet, and lifestyle. To get your pet spring cleaning started off right, we asked Calgary-based cleaning expert from Go Clean Go, Sarah McAllister, to share her best tips and tricks for pet owners on how to keep their home looking and smelling fresh all season long.

How can I deodorize common spaces like couches, carpets and pet beds?

“To deodorize areas that have a distinct pet odour, you can use Febreze! Vacuum the area well first to get rid of any pet hair and dander. Then, spray the fabric/furniture down until it is fully damp and let it dry before you let your pooch have a nap again. Wetting the fabric will allow the malodours—a fancy word for what makes things stinky—to become trapped and destroyed. Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator cleans away odours embedded in fabrics and other soft surfaces, leaving a light, fresh scent. You can also use Febreze AIR Heavy Duty Pet in any room you need to get rid of lingering pet odours.”

What’s the best way to get rid of pet hair that’s deeply embedded into clothing, fabrics and furniture?

“Dogs and cats’ coats change seasonally, and spring is when they blow out their winter coats. One must-have cleaning product for pet owners is Bounce Pet Dryer Sheets, hands down. They look like regular dryer sheets but they are made for pet owners. They are double the size of most dryer sheets and work to reduce wrinkles, static and add softness, all while repelling pet hair and lint from your clothes so you can get snuggles from your pet without wearing them to the office.”

What’s your best advice for getting rid of old pet stains?

“It’s always best to properly clean up pet accidents as soon as they happen. Pets can smell these odours and since pets like to mark their territory, they will continue to have accidents in the same spot until you deal with the scent entirely. In terms of the best products to use for cleanup, it depends on the surface. For pet messes on hard surfaces, I use Mr. Clean Multi-Surface Cleaner Liquid. For fabrics you can throw in the wash, use an enzyme cleaner like Tide Powder to help eliminate any smells and break down the stain. And finally, for carpet, try a steam cleaner to deep clean the fibers at the base of the fabric.”

It’s also allergy season! Do you have any pro advice for reducing/tackling pet dander in the home?

“This is the time of year you will see the most amount of pet hair and have the most dander in your home. Vacuum up as much pet hair as you can, mop your floors and for in-between maintenance, you can use Swiffer Pet Heavy Duty Sweeper . Its thick, heavy-duty pads and fiber fingers get deep into the grooves other tools miss. Store it somewhere handy so you can easily use it daily to help pick up those pesky pet hairs that float down from the rafters.”

Are there any specific tasks that should be done on a daily basis? Weekly? Monthly?

“We like to deep clean one room at a time and then the maintenance is nowhere near as daunting. Pulling furniture away from walls, vacuuming your couch cushions and getting all the hidden pet hair out from the corners will make your home stay cleaner for longer. For quick maintenance, keep a Swiffer Pet Heavy Duty Duster around the places your pet likes to frequent, like the top of their crate, or near your bed if they like to cuddle up with you at night.”

If there’s one must-have cleaning item a pet owner should have in the house, what would it be?

“It all comes down to the job at hand. For trapping and locking pet hair in between a deep clean, my go-to’s are Swiffer Pet Heavy Duty Dusters and Swiffer Sweeper Pet Heavy Duty Dry. For stubborn stinks embedded in fabrics and soft surfaces I can’t throw into the wash, I trust Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator. And finally, I love Bounce Pet Dryer Sheets for keeping pet hair off of me and my clothes.”
